Best Bike Lights for Commuting: A UK Guide to Staying Visible

The rule is simple: from sunset to sunrise you need a white front light, a red rear light, and a red rear reflector. What nobody tells you is how that translates into lumens, battery life, and which features actually matter on a dark, wet commute.

This guide covers the legal requirements and what to look for when choosing lights. It does not recommend specific products — prices and stock change quickly, and any item listed as a “best buy” today may be discontinued next month. Where relevant, “check current price” is the honest answer.

What UK Law Requires

Highway Code Rule 60 is the legal baseline for cyclists riding on public roads after dark. It requires:

  • A white front light, lit
  • A red rear light, lit
  • A red rear reflector
  • Amber pedal reflectors, if the bike was manufactured after 1 October 1985

Riding without lights at night is an offence. You also cannot fit a red light at the front of your bike or a white light at the rear.

Flashing lights became legal in 2005 under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (Amendment) 2005, provided they flash between 60 and 240 times per minute. The Highway Code still recommends a steady front lamp if you are riding on unlit roads, because a flashing beam makes it harder for other road users to judge your speed and distance.

British Standards: Under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, a front light capable of emitting a steady beam must conform to BS6102/3 (or an equivalent EC or UKCA standard). Rear lights must meet BS3648 or BS6102/3. A light used in flashing mode only must emit at least four candelas — approximately 48 lumens. Most lights sold by mainstream UK cycle retailers comply. Check the box or product page if you are buying an unfamiliar brand.

Daytime lights are not legally required, but a flashing rear light in poor visibility is one of the most effective low-cost safety additions to any commute.

How Many Lumens Do You Need?

UK law does not specify lumens, which means the right output depends on where you ride.

On well-lit urban streets, a front light of 200 to 400 lumens is enough to be seen by drivers and to see any hazards in the road ahead. The streetlights do most of the work; your light is mainly a visibility signal.

On unlit suburban or rural roads, you need to illuminate the road itself as well as signal your presence. 400 to 800 lumens is a practical starting point. Riders with long stretches of unlit lane often use higher-output lights with multiple modes — a higher beam for open roads and a lower setting for lit sections to preserve battery.

For the rear light, raw lumen output matters less than beam angle and spread. A light that also fires sideways is more visible at junctions where drivers approach from the side. Common rear lights for commuting run between 30 and 100 lumens; some offer a separate daytime flash mode at higher output.

As a reference point, one candela is approximately 12 lumens. The four-candela minimum for a flashing-only front light is therefore around 48 lumens — a very low floor that most modern lights exceed comfortably.

Choosing a Front Light

Runtime at real-world settings

Manufacturers quote maximum runtime at the lowest setting, which is almost never the one you will use. Look for runtime figures at the mode you will actually ride on — typically a medium or high-steady setting — not the flashing economy mode. A two-hour runtime on a 45-minute commute sounds adequate until you forget to charge it on a Tuesday and need it again on Wednesday morning.

USB-C charging

USB-C has become the standard for rechargeable bike lights. Older Micro-USB models are increasingly hard to find, and a single cable for phone, light, and earbuds is practical for commuters. If you do shift work or travel, a light that also runs on AA batteries has obvious backup value — you can buy batteries in any newsagent if the rechargeable runs flat.

Mount compatibility

Most front lights use a quarter-turn mount or a rubber-strap clamp. Before buying, check your handlebar diameter: road and hybrid bars are typically 22.2 mm (at the drops or tops) or 31.8 mm (at the stem clamp). Some lights are compatible with out-front or stem mounts, which keeps the cockpit cleaner and positions the beam lower for better road illumination.

Beam pattern

A light designed for road cycling typically projects a focused, forward beam. A commuter-optimised light often adds a wider spread to improve side visibility and reduce shadows from parked cars or kerbs. If you ride through narrow lanes or poorly lit paths, a wider beam can be more useful than maximum forward throw.

Choosing a Rear Light

Visibility angle

A rear light that spreads its beam sideways as well as rearward is more useful in urban traffic than one that fires straight back. At roundabouts, side streets, and left turns, the threat comes from beside you as much as from directly behind. Look for the advertised visibility angle on the product description, not just the lumen figure.

Mount options

Seatpost mounts are the most straightforward option. If you use a saddle bag, look for a rear light that attaches to the seatstay or mudguard instead, or one with an adjustable mount that clears the bag. A helmet-mounted rear light adds a second point of visibility that moves with your head — useful when turning across traffic.

Daytime running mode

Many rear lights now include a separate daytime mode — a higher-output, wide-angle flash pattern designed to be visible against a lit sky. It typically uses more power than a night flash mode but increases conspicuity on exposed roads in daylight. Worth checking if your commute includes long, fast roads where drivers approach from distance.

Battery Performance in Cold Weather

Cold temperatures reduce lithium battery capacity. In January at 2–5°C, expect 10 to 20 per cent less runtime than the manufacturer’s quoted figure, which is typically measured at around 20°C. Keeping the light in a jacket pocket until you are ready to ride helps on cold mornings, as does starting the ride with a fully charged battery rather than one that is already at 60 per cent.

If you commute year-round in the dark and cannot always predict when you will return, carrying a spare AA or AAA light — or a small USB power bank — is worth the minimal extra weight. Running out of rear light on an unlit road is a serious safety risk.

Waterproofing: What the IP Rating Means

UK commuting means rain, often without warning. IP ratings give you a consistent standard to compare:

  • IPX4 — splash resistant from any direction. The minimum for a commuter light.
  • IPX6 — resistant to powerful water jets. Better for heavy rain or road spray from lorries.
  • IPX7 — survives temporary submersion to 1 metre. Useful if you ride through flood-prone routes or ford streams.

A claim of “weatherproof” or “water resistant” without an IP rating is not a verified standard. Check the specification sheet, not just the marketing copy.

Lights and the Cycle to Work Scheme

Lights, mudguards, locks, and other accessories count as qualifying equipment under the Cycle to Work Scheme, provided they are bought alongside a qualifying bike in the same application.
