This policy explains what happens to your data when you visit I’d Rather Cycle (idrathercycle.org). We have tried to keep it plain. If anything is unclear, email us and we will explain.
Who we are
I’d Rather Cycle is an independent cycling website run by Raffaele Nocera. For any question about this policy or your data, the contact point is [email protected]. For the purposes of UK data protection law, that is the contact for the person responsible for your data on this site.
What we collect
You do not need an account to read anything here, and we do not ask you to register or hand over personal details to use the site or its calculators — the calculators run entirely in your browser and send us nothing.
We collect data in only two ways:
- If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use it only to reply. We do not add you to any list or share it with anyone.
- Server logs. Like almost every website, our host and our content-delivery network automatically record technical information — your IP address, browser type, the pages you request and the time — to keep the site running and secure. These logs are rotated and deleted automatically.
Analytics
We measure how many people visit and which pages are read using Cloudflare Web Analytics. It is privacy-friendly by design: it sets no cookies, does not fingerprint you, and does not track you across other websites. The figures we see are aggregate and do not identify you.
We also use Google Analytics. Until you accept, in Google’s consent message or in our cookie banner, it runs in consent-denied mode, setting no cookies and sending only an anonymous ping. If you accept, it sets analytics cookies and we additionally load Microsoft Clarity, which records how you scroll and click on a page. Both are listed in our cookie policy.
Cookies
If you reject non-essential cookies, the only cookies this site sets are small ones that remember that choice, so we do not ask you again on every page. If you accept, Google Analytics and advertising cookies can be set as well. Visitors from the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are asked through Google’s consent message, everyone else through our own banner, and you can change your choice at any time with the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. Advertising and affiliate links
The site carries Google AdSense code, so that adverts from Google can appear on its pages and help cover its running costs. When a page loads, your browser contacts Google, which receives technical information such as your IP address and the page you are reading.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a visitor’s prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. On this site that only happens if you consent: if you refuse, you will only see non-personalised ads.
You can opt out of personalised advertising from Google in Google’s Ads Settings, and from many other advertising companies at aboutads.info. How Google uses information from sites that use its services is explained at policies.google.com.
The site does not contain affiliate links. If that changes, we will update this policy first and label affiliate links clearly.
Hosting and infrastructure
The site is hosted by Hostinger and delivered through Cloudflare, which provides our content-delivery network and security. Both process the technical log data described above on our behalf. Because Cloudflare operates a global network, some of this data may be processed outside the UK, under the safeguards required by UK data protection law.
Legal basis
We rely on our legitimate interests in running a secure, working website and understanding its traffic in aggregate (for the server logs and cookieless analytics), and on your consent for the non-essential analytics and advertising cookies described above. Where you have emailed us, we use your message to respond to you.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to ask us for a copy of any personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable form. As we hold very little — essentially only emails you have sent us — most requests are simple. To exercise any of these, email [email protected].
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK’s regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office, at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles data — for example if affiliate links are added — we will update this page and change the date at the top.
