What Halfords offers
Halfords runs a free bike health check at any of its stores — walk in, no appointment needed, no obligation to go further. If work is needed, a mechanic will give you a quote on the spot. You’re free to take that quote away and use a different shop.
Beyond the free check, there are three paid service tiers: Bronze, Silver and Platinum. There’s also a CycleCare subscription plan if you want annual coverage at a fixed price. This guide covers each in turn.

The free bike health check
Walk your bike into any Halfords and ask for a health check — there’s no charge and no obligation. A qualified mechanic goes through:
- Frame and contact points — frame integrity, saddle, handlebars and stem
- Wheels — tyre condition and pressure, rim wear, spoke tension, hub play
- Brakes — levers, calipers, pads and cables (or hydraulic hose condition)
- Drivetrain — gears, chain wear, cranks and cables
- E-bike electrical components — visual check for physical damage on electric bikes
You leave with a written report and a no-obligation quote for any work Halfords recommends. If the quote surprises you, take it to an independent bike shop for a second opinion before committing to anything. This alone makes the free check useful even if you never spend a penny at Halfords — it gives you a starting point before a new commuting season or a long trip.
Bronze Service — from £40
The entry-level paid service suits bikes that are mechanically sound but haven’t been ridden for a while, or bikes that see occasional rather than daily use. After a health check, a mechanic:
- Adjusts and aligns gears
- Lubricates the drivetrain
- Checks and adjusts brakes to ensure they’re working correctly
The Bronze is essentially a tune-up. Cables are not replaced, wheels are not trued, and hydraulic systems are not bled. If your existing cables are frayed or stretched, or if your wheels have developed a wobble, the Bronze won’t fix those problems — you’d need the Silver tier for that.
Silver Service — from £65
The Silver tier covers everything in the Bronze and adds the consumable replacements that regular riders typically need every season:
- All brake and gear cables replaced with new
- Wheels checked and trued
- Hydraulic disc brakes bled with fresh fluid (where fitted)
Halfords recommends the Silver Service every six to twelve months for bikes in regular use. For year-round commuters this is the tier where the money is generally well spent. Worn or stretched cables are behind most shifting and braking problems that gradually sneak up on commuters; new cables make the biggest single difference to how a bike feels.
If your bike has hydraulic disc brakes, the Silver also includes a brake bleed — a job that most riders pay separately for at an independent shop.
Platinum Service — from £140
The Platinum is a full strip-down. The bike comes apart to the frame and bottom bracket, all components are cleaned thoroughly, and key parts — cables, housing, any worn items — are replaced and set up fresh. Halfords positions this for keen cyclists and bikes that have seen several seasons of heavy use without a proper overhaul.
At £140 (or more, depending on parts), it’s the most expensive option. Before booking, use the free health check to confirm the work is actually warranted — a Platinum on a bike with fundamentally worn components (chain, cassette, chainrings) will still leave you with fundamentally worn components, since consumable drivetrain parts are not included unless specified.
CycleCare subscription plans
As an alternative to paying for each service individually, Halfords offers CycleCare — a one-off payment covering one year (or three years) of servicing and benefits. Current tiers are Classic, Enhanced and Premium, with e-bike-specific plans also available. Prices range from around £15 to £65 for a year’s cover, though these change and vary by bike type.
CycleCare can work out cheaper than individual services if you ride throughout the year and expect to use Halfords more than once. How to book
Two options: book online via halfords.com (shows availability at your nearest store) or walk in. For the free health check, walk-in is fine. For paid services, booking online in advance is worth doing between March and August, when demand typically peaks and same-week slots fill up quickly.
Halfords aims to turn most repairs around within 48 hours. For a full Platinum service or if parts need ordering, allow up to five days. The store should confirm the turnaround when you drop the bike off.
Halfords versus an independent bike shop
The honest comparison is: it depends on the specific store and specific mechanic.
Halfords has the advantage of being everywhere and offering consistent, published pricing. The free health check and no-obligation quotes are a genuine differentiator — most independent shops charge for a diagnostic. For routine work (cable replacement, brake bleed, wheel true), Halfords is a perfectly reasonable choice for many riders.
Where independent bike shops (IBSs) tend to pull ahead is on complex or specialist work — wheel building, suspension servicing, diagnosing an intermittent noise that requires real diagnosis rather than a checklist. The average independent mechanic has more cycling-specific experience than the average Halfords technician.
A practical approach: check Google reviews for your specific local Halfords store — not the brand overall, but that branch. Then check whether there’s an IBS nearby with strong reviews.
