Can You Use Cyclescheme or Bike2Work at Halfords? Which Shops Take Which Scheme

The short answer: until October 2026 Halfords only took its own scheme, Cycle2Work. That is changing for Cyclescheme. On 7 October 2026 Cyclescheme and Halfords announced a partnership under which Halfords is due to be onboarded as a Cyclescheme retailer “later this month”. Bike2Work and the Green Commute Initiative (GCI) are a different story: neither works at Halfords. And a Halfords Cycle2Work voucher is not limited to Halfords stores.

The rest of this page sets out which voucher works where, and what to check before you place an order. If you are still choosing a provider, our comparison of Cyclescheme, Cycle2Work and GCI covers the differences in fees and terms. This page answers a narrower question: I have this scheme, will this shop take it?

Which shops take which scheme

All the cycle to work providers run on the same HMRC salary sacrifice rules. What separates them, in practice, is the list of shops that will accept their paperwork. Here is how it stands as of 12 October 2026, from each provider’s or retailer’s own pages:

  • Halfords Cycle2Work. Halfords stores, click and collect on halfords.com, Tredz online, and what Halfords’ help centre describes as “over 860+ independent bike stores around the UK and Ireland”.
  • Cyclescheme. Cyclescheme’s own partner network, which you search with the retailer finder on cyclescheme.co.uk. Halfords’ help centre says Tredz takes Cyclescheme. Halfords itself is being added this month (see below).
  • Bike2Work Scheme. Bike2Work’s partner shop list, which it says runs to “more than 2,200 partner shops”, searchable by town and with a separate list of online shops. Halfords’ help centre says Tredz takes Bike2Work. Halfords does not.
  • Green Commute Initiative. Shops registered as GCI resellers, plus approved manufacturers that sell direct. GCI’s FAQs say it does “not deal with Halfords, Cycle Republic or Wheelies because they only accept vouchers from the Halfords scheme”.

One thing that list makes clear: a single shop can sit in several networks at once. Tredz, for example, is listed by Halfords as accepting Cycle2Work, Cyclescheme and Bike2Work. Many independents are the same. If you have a particular shop in mind, the quickest route is to search for it on your provider’s finder, then ring the shop to confirm.

Halfords and Cyclescheme: what changed in October 2026

The partnership was announced on 7 October 2026 and reported by Cycling Industry News, BikeBiz and Retail Times. The key points from that coverage:

  • Cyclescheme, part of BHN Extras, is adding Halfords to its retailer network.
  • The coverage puts the deal at 373 Halfords stores across the UK.
  • Halfords “will be onboarded and available as a Cyclescheme retailer later this month”, so no exact go-live date was given.
  • Cycling Industry News reported that Halfords confirmed its own Cycle2Work vouchers will continue to be offered alongside.

There was some groundwork before the announcement. The Open University, whose staff scheme is run by Cyclescheme, notes on its cycle scheme review page that Halfords became “a permanent part of CycleScheme” after a trial. So a handful of employers may have seen Halfords as an option in their Cyclescheme portal earlier than everyone else.

Now the caveat. When we checked on 12 October 2026, Halfords’ help centre still said: “At Halfords, we only accept Cycle2Work.” That page may simply not have been updated yet, but it means you should not walk into a store with a Cyclescheme certificate on the strength of a press release. Before you apply, check that Halfords appears in the retailer finder on your employer’s Cyclescheme portal, and ask the store whether it can redeem the certificate. The Cyclescheme process itself does not change: you apply through your employer’s portal, your employer approves the amount, and you exchange the certificate at the retailer.

If you already hold a Cyclescheme certificate for another shop, do not assume you can move it to Halfords. Ask Cyclescheme first.

Why Bike2Work and GCI do not work at Halfords

The plain reason is that Halfords runs its own scheme and, on its own help centre, says it only accepts that one. It also lists schemes it does not take, including Cycle Solutions and NHS schemes. Bike2Work is not among the schemes it accepts. GCI puts it from the other side: it does not deal with Halfords because Halfords only takes Halfords vouchers.

The names cause a lot of confusion here. Bike2Work Scheme is an independent provider and has no link with Halfords, even though Halfords’ product is called Cycle2Work. Our Bike2Work explainer covers how that scheme works. If your employer uses Bike2Work or GCI and your heart is set on a bike that only Halfords stocks, you have two realistic options. You can choose a similar bike from a shop in your scheme’s network, or you can ask your employer whether it would offer a second provider. It costs nothing to ask.

Using a Halfords Cycle2Work voucher outside Halfords

The opposite question comes up just as often: does Cycle2Work tie you to Halfords? Not entirely. Halfords’ help centre lists three routes besides its own stores:

  • click and collect on halfords.com, choosing Cycle2Work at checkout;
  • Tredz, online;
  • independent bike shops in Halfords’ network, which it puts at “over 860+” across the UK and Ireland.

Independent shops in that network are not a free-for-all. You need a shop that is in Halfords’ network, and how the voucher is allocated to that shop is set by Halfords, not by you. Contact Halfords’ Cycle2Work team with the shop’s name before you commit. Some shops are open about the cost: Cycles UK, for example, says Halfords charges it a fee to accept Cycle2Work vouchers and adds a surcharge on scheme purchases as a result. Ask about this before you order. For the details of spending the voucher, including part-spends and top-ups, see our guide to the Halfords Cycle2Work voucher. For what the scheme can be spent on, see what you can buy on Halfords Cycle2Work.

Before you order: a quick check

  1. Find out which provider your employer uses. You cannot pick it yourself. The provider decides the shop network, not the other way round.
  2. Search for the shop on that provider’s finder. Use your employer’s own portal where possible.
  3. Ring the shop. Ask whether it accepts your scheme for the bike and kit you want, and whether it adds any fee or excludes sale items on scheme purchases.
  4. For Cyclescheme at Halfords, check the date. The partnership was due to go live in late October 2026. If Halfords is not in your retailer finder yet, wait rather than apply for a certificate you cannot use.

The tax savings work the same way whichever provider you are on, because they come from salary sacrifice rather than the shop. Our cycle to work scheme guide includes a calculator if you want to see what a given bike price works out at on your salary.

FAQ

Does Halfords accept Cyclescheme?

It is in the process of joining. On 7 October 2026 Cyclescheme and Halfords announced that Halfords would be onboarded as a Cyclescheme retailer later that month. When we checked on 12 October 2026, Halfords’ help centre still said it only accepts Cycle2Work, so check Cyclescheme’s retailer finder or ask your local store before you order.

Can I use a Bike2Work voucher at Halfords?

Not according to Halfords. Its help centre says Halfords only accepts Cycle2Work. Bike2Work vouchers are spent through Bike2Work’s own partner shops, which include Tredz online according to Halfords’ help centre.

Is Cyclescheme the same as Cycle2Work?

No. Cyclescheme is part of BHN Extras. Cycle2Work is Halfords’ own scheme. Both use salary sacrifice under the same HMRC rules, but they have separate shop networks, separate paperwork and separate end-of-hire terms. Our Cyclescheme explainer and Halfords Cycle2Work guide go through each one.

Can I use a Halfords Cycle2Work voucher in another shop?

Yes, within Halfords’ network. Halfords says Cycle2Work can be redeemed in its stores, through click and collect on halfords.com, at Tredz online, and at more than 860 independent bike shops in the UK and Ireland.

Scheme networks change often. Information checked on 12 October 2026 against Halfords’ help centre, the Bike2Work and GCI websites, and press coverage of the Cyclescheme–Halfords announcement. Always confirm with your provider before ordering.
